Toyota Hilux is a line of vehicles that includes pick-up trucks and other models. The cars are manufactured by the Japanese car company Toyota, which developed them for commercial use as well as off-road driving.
The first generation Toyota Hilux, the world’s first mass-produced pickup truck, was introduced in 1968 with a 1.5L inline-four engine and four-speed manual transmission. The car replaced Hino Briska as Toyota’s light commercial vehicle.
In 1972, the second-generation Hilux was launched with a more comfortable interior and improved exterior. The pick-up came in various versions that included transmission and engine options for global markets.
In 1978, the third-generation Toyota Hilux was introduced. The new model had a wider front and rear base and featured updated suspensions. A 4WD variant was available only with larger engines—at least 2 liters in displacement size.
In 1983, Toyota launched the fourth generation of its Hilux pick-up with a redesigned interior and added cargo space. Later in 1987, it received a minor external facelift consisting of new bumpers and a grille design.
The fifth generation Hilux debuted in 1988 and had minor improvements. The only noticeable difference was a larger wheelbase but it is still considered to be part of the fifth-gen line.
The sixth generation which ran from 1999 to 2005 sported significant changes including an independent suspension system on all models except 21RE utes built after December 1998.
The seventh and eighth generations of the Hilux were manufactured by foreign companies. These models had modern designs with more advanced technology than previous ones. Revo was introduced as a trim level for the eighth-generation Hilux in 2015. The Revo Rocco came with different front-end styling and fog lamps, while subsequent 2020 facelifts saw minor external and internal improvements made to benefit driver safety.

Exterior of Toyota Hilux
The Toyota Hilux 2022 has a commanding presence, thanks to its bold yet sharp exterior. The front of the vehicle is defined by a bold trapezoid grille with Hi-grade bi-beam LED halogen lamps. Below these headlamps lie LED fog lamps, and at the back are LED combination taillights. A high-mounted stop lamp completes the rear profile of this vehicle.
Interior Of Toyota Hilux

The new Toyota Hilux 2022 features a black interior with a smart-entry system. Common features of all the trims include air conditioning, heating, side defogger, and adjustable headrests—all available to drivers at no extra cost. The Hilux E lacks only air conditioning, steering controls, and an infotainment system.
Except for the Hilux E, all other trims of this vehicle have a power door lock system with speed, jack-knife wireless key fobs; windows that roll down via an electrically operated motor; and windshield wipers with misting capability.
The only single-cabin Hilux 4×4 trim has manual air conditioning while the rest lack it completely. Common features of this trim include a heater, adjustable headrests, and an illuminated entry system—but not an immobilizer because the car is too old for that.
The single cabin has a number of safety features, including oil level and light reminders, key reminders, start-up clutch prevention, and anti-lock braking.
Pros and Cons of Toyota Hilux
Pros
- Refined diesel engine
- Strong off-road ability
- Commendable resale value
Cons
- Good Interior
- Enjoyable ride
- No immobilizer
Engine of Toyota Hilux
The new Toyota Hilux 2022 will be equipped with turbocharged engines, one option being a petrol engine and the other a diesel. The single cabin trims include Hilux deckless (which comes with a 2393 cc diesel engine), the 4×2 Petrol which boasts a 2694 cc petrol engine, and both the 4×2 and UPSPEC versions of this model—both equipped with an 2393cc DXI power plant. I further discovered that there is also a version called Hilux Hi-Grade; it has a 2755 CC diesel motor.
The diesel engines in the double cabin trim—Hilux E, Toyota Hilux Revo G 2.8 Manual and Automatic, and Toyota Hilux Revo V Automatic 2.8—have a combined output of 2755 cc.
Toyota Hilux Ride & Handling
The new Hilux 2022 is now better equipped for off-road adventures. Its stiff suspension and strong engine make it superior to other vehicles in its class—and the ride quality remains excellent throughout.
The stiff suspension may be bothersome in routine driving but allows the Hilux to carry heavy loads. The manual transmission is more responsive than the automatic but takes longer to reach a maximum speed
The Toyota Hilux 2022 provides a comfortable ride, but it takes skill to handle as a pick-up.
Toyota Hilux Maintenance
Toyota Hilux is assembled in Pakistan, so its parts are easily available here. The downside of this is that they cost more than imported models and might make maintenance difficult for some people.
Competetors of Toyota Hilux
Toyota Hilux 2022 faces competition with Isuzu D-Max in the Pakistani market. In addition, Nissan Navara, Toyota Tacoma, and Mitsubishi Animal are imported from other countries and not locally assembled.
The Isuzu D-Max has some additional features that make it a stronger competitor than the Toyota Hilux, including remote control boot lid and child lock. It also has better mileage but costs around the same as its Japanese counterpart. In terms of safety features like an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), however, there is no match to what our pick offers.
Conclusion
With an impressive new design and a host of new features offered on the improved Toyota Hilux, it’s clear that this vehicle continues to advance while staying true to its essential nature. If you are looking to buy a work truck, or just want something affordable that can handle anything life throws at it, look no further than the Toyota Hilux.
