Toyota Land Cruiser is a series of four-wheel drive vehicles produced by the Japanese manufacturer Toyota since 1954. In Japan, the Land Cruiser has been marketed as the Toyota Truck and Toyoace. The Land Cruiser has been in continuous production, with over 10 million built as of 2016.

Toyota’s full-size SUV started as the Toyota BJ Series, and their first model was the F1B truck, based on a prototype called the TA22 that Toyota designed in 1951. The F1B had an 80 kW inline-four cylinder engine with a 3-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. The F1B also had a transfer case that allowed it to shift from 2WD to 4WD, which Toyota called “4WDL”, for Four Wheel Drive Low.

The next model was called the F2B, and it had a more powerful 1.5-liter inline-four cylinder engine with around 76 kW (101 hp). The F2B also introduced features such as power steering and air conditioning, although these were options initially. This model continued production until 1958, but no significant changes were made until 1960, when the third generation model was released, known as BJ40.
